In our last blog, we talked all about the Mazda MX-5 Miata and what makes it such a popular model. The popularity of this model even earned it recognition from the Guinness Book of Word Records in 2000. As we stated before, a handful of editors from AutoGuide.com decided to share their favorite MX-5 Miata experiences and we shared the first half of those stories in our last blog. Here, we have the final three stories available for you so be sure to read through them and then stop by DELLA Mazda of Glens Falls and take a test drive in the 2016 Mazda Miata MX-5!
4.) Features Editor Sami Haj-Assaad – For Sami, his story is one that speaks more to his competitive nature and is an example of how being too competitive can get you into trouble at times. Sami and his colleague were taking part in a navigational rally back in 2014 and he had the role of navigator and note taker. At one part of the rally, however, he got behind the wheel and took to the race track. He was unfamiliar with the course and was focusing too much on getting a best time in during his three laps. As a result, he misjudged the track elevation on his last lap and ended up hitting the passenger side rear quarter panel against the tire wall. Luckily he and his passenger were not injured and the vehicle only sustained minimal damage as the airbags did not deploy. Even so, he had to face a bit of embarrassment and a slightly dented car that resulted from his over-zealous attitude. In the end, though, this setback inspired them to try harder through the rest of the rally and they ended up coming in first place!
5.) Associate Editor Craig Cole – Craig’s story is about juvenile rebellion. He decided to take his favorite MX-5 Miata out for a joyride when none of his colleagues were looking. Back in 2015 AutoGuide.com was shooting their Car of the Year comparison test at Willow Springs racetrack in Southern California and he took some time in-between takes to take the Miata out in an empty parking lot. He turned off the traction control, revved the engine, put the car in first gear and let out the clutch. This resulted in the rear tires squealing as he navigated the car around the parking lot sliding rear-end first in any and all directions of his choosing. In the end, he brought the car back no worse for the wear and with no one else having witnessed.
6.) News Editor Stephen Elmer – Stephen was at the annual Test Fest held by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) and he had just finished testing out the new Mustang GT350 when he decided to try getting behind the wheel of the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Having the opportunity to do a back-to-back comparison on the two vehicles he found that the MX-5 offers the same heightened level of fun as the Mustang but he felt he had considerably more control as he took to the twisty roads and was able to enjoy the open road and everything that this exciting model had to offer. Overall, he found that this experience proved that you do not need to have a high level of horsepower to make a car fun, just a quality built vehicle with top maneuvering and handling abilities.
