In our last blog, we talked all about the Mazda MX-5 Miata and what makes it such a popular model. The popularity of this model even earned it recognition from the Guinness Book of Word Records in 2000. As we stated before, a handful of editors from AutoGuide.com decided to share their favorite MX-5 Miata experiences and we shared the first half of those stories in our last blog. Here, we have the final three stories available for you so be sure to read through them and then stop by DELLA Mazda of Glens Falls and take a test drive in the 2016 Mazda Miata MX-5!
4.) Features Editor Sami Haj-Assaad – For Sami, his story is one that speaks more to his competitive nature and is an example of how being too competitive can get you into trouble at times. Sami and his colleague were taking part in a navigational rally back in 2014 and he had the role of navigator and note taker. At one part of the rally, however, he got behind the wheel and took to the race track. He was unfamiliar with the course and was focusing too much on getting a best time in during his three laps. As a result, he misjudged the track elevation on his last lap and ended up hitting the passenger side rear quarter panel against the tire wall. Luckily he and his passenger were not injured and the vehicle only sustained minimal damage as the airbags did not deploy. Even so, he had to face a bit of embarrassment and a slightly dented car that resulted from his over-zealous attitude. In the end, though, this setback inspired them to try harder through the rest of the rally and they ended up coming in first place!
5.) Associate Editor Craig Cole – Craig’s story is about juvenile rebellion. He decided to take his favorite MX-5 Miata out for a joyride when none of his colleagues were looking. Back in 2015 AutoGuide.com was shooting their Car of the Year comparison test at Willow Springs racetrack in Southern California and he took some time in-between takes to take the Miata out in an empty parking lot. He turned off the traction control, revved the engine, put the car in first gear and let out the clutch. This resulted in the rear tires squealing as he navigated the car around the parking lot sliding rear-end first in any and all directions of his choosing. In the end, he brought the car back no worse for the wear and with no one else having witnessed.
6.) News Editor Stephen Elmer – Stephen was at the annual Test Fest held by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) and he had just finished testing out the new Mustang GT350 when he decided to try getting behind the wheel of the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. Having the opportunity to do a back-to-back comparison on the two vehicles he found that the MX-5 offers the same heightened level of fun as the Mustang but he felt he had considerably more control as he took to the twisty roads and was able to enjoy the open road and everything that this exciting model had to offer. Overall, he found that this experience proved that you do not need to have a high level of horsepower to make a car fun, just a quality built vehicle with top maneuvering and handling abilities.

The MX-5 Miata has had a long and illustrious history for the Mazda brand having grown to become one of the most popular models for the company since it was first introduced back in 1989. In the nearly thirty years since its introduction it has won numerous awards and sold more than 1,000,000 models. It was even recognized by Guinness Book of Word Records back in 2000 as the “best-selling two-seat convertible in history”. Therefore, it is safe to say that the MX-5 Miata holds a special place for the Mazda brand and anyone who has ever owned one.
AutoGuide.com editors decided to share their favorite MX-5 Miata memories as they looked back on the different model versions that they have had the opportnity to drive over the years. A total of six editors shared their story, we have the first three here so look out for the rest in a future blog.
1.) Managing Editor Jodi Lai – Jodi says that her favorite MX-5 Miata experience happened back in March of 2014 when she was testing out an NC MX-5 that had some incredible snow tires on it. Considering this vehicle is a convertible and the temperature at the time was a bitter -17 degrees (F), she understandably gained a few stares from pedestrians, fellow drivers, and a few police officers as she drove down the street with the top down. However, she says that with her parka, gloves, scarf, and fluffy hat that she barely felt the cold as she navigated this light, rear-wheel drive convertible sports car along the road. She says that what she remembers most from that experience is the look of surprise and delight that she gained from nearly everyone she passed making this one test drive that she will never forget.
2.) Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Yarkony – For Jonathan, his favorite MX-5 Miata was the Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata that he drove around Maui on his honeymoon. He says that when planning the trip he was looking for a convertible to drive around while he and his new spouse enjoyed the beautiful sites. He ended up lucking out by finding a local dealer in the area that specialized in renting exotic vehicles and they had this model in stock. What was even better was that this was the 2004 model which was the only MX-5 Miata to be equipped with a factory turbocharged engine. This, along with the manual transmission and compact size of this model made it ideal for traveling along the famous Hana Highway which is a long, winding coastal road that is located along the end of a volcano that overlooks the ocean. The turbocharged capabilities of this model made it ideal for experiencing a nice long drive along this scenic stretch of road.
3.) News Editor Jason Siu – For Jason, unfortunately, his very first experience behind the wheel of an MX-5 Miata was one that did not fully allow him to appreciate the power and capabilities of this model as he would have liked. His cousin ordered a new Miata and asked Jason to pick it up for him. What sounded like an awesome opportunity ended up being much more complicated than he had expected. Jason was used to driving a manual vehicle but on the flat roads of Southern California and Florida. So when he had to drive this new Miata on the steep, winding roads of San Francisco he quickly realized that he was out of his league. So he spent most of the time trying to make sure that he wasn’t ruining the clutch on the unfamiliar roads rather than being able to truly appreciate all that this model was capable of on these twisty country roads.

Helpful Tips For Preventing Distracted Driving
With our society’s ever-increasing dependence on mobile devices, distracted driving has risen significantly becoming one of the leading causes of motor vehicle accidents. According to statistics from Distraction.Gov in 2014 alone 3,179 people were killed and 431,000 were injured in motor vehicle accidents that were caused by distracted drivers. These facts show just how serious this problem has become and why we all need to make the effort to prevent ourselves from becoming distracted, especially by our cell phones, while driving. Below we have a few helpful hints that we encourage you to keep in mind the next time you get behind the wheel.
1.) Silence/Hide Phone – We have all become so conditioned to the sound of a phone ringing or a text message notification that we automatically check our phones every time we hear one go off. Therefore, one tip to avoid this happening while driving is to put your phone on silent so that you will not hear it if anyone calls or messages you. That way the impulse to reach for your phone will not be there. Also, you can try putting your phone out of reach such as placing it in your purse then, putting the purse in your backseat so that even if you do hear it you will not be able to answer it.
2.) Designated Texter – Having a designated driver when you plan on drinking is a precaution that most of us have employed. So why not do the same for texting? When you are traveling with companions designate one of them to be your texter for the duration of the ride so that you can still send and receive your messages and keep your attention on the task at hand.
3.) Pull Over – If you receive a message or phone call that you absolutely need to answer while on the road, the best thing to do is to find a safe place to pull over so that out can respond safely without trying to do so while still attempting to navigate the vehicle.
4.) Plan Ahead – One more solution to preventing driving and texting is to take care of all necessary communication before you get behind the wheel. Take care of any phone calls or texts that you need to send ahead of time and then let anyone who may try and get in touch with you know that you are going to be driving so that they will not call or text while you’re on the road.
